Difficult times bring lessons
Exams are over (thank God)! I still can't believe next year will be my 5th year of medical school! Honestly it has been my hardest exam season so far. It was long and intense and as time went on my motivation would deteriorate. Now its over and a weight has been lifted. But I still feel a little tense.
Right now I have to stay in Bulgaria for my clinical placements. For placements we only need to be in the hospital in the early morning hours and as students we can't do that much anyway. Unfortunately my Bulgarian speaking skills are not very good either and I feel embarrassed to speak to staff and patients at the hospital who don't speak English (not to mention some staff seem so angry about my language skills). I am more disappointed in myself since I should know the language better. Balancing medical studies with learning a new language is hard and practising the language more is something I avoided for a long time.
After the placement the rest of the days feel empty since I have no classes and my close friends and family are at home for summer.
However, I have decided to use these days positively. I am never in Bulgaria for more than the university session and I will use these extra days as a new learning opportunity. I will spend my days meeting people, enjoying the beautiful city and immersing myself more in the culture and learning the language. I will also be more firm at the hospital and make sure the hours I am there are not spent waiting around but being productive. Today I started this pattern and it will only get better onwards. I will be home soon so lets use these days in the best way possible! I am already planning to go to an opera at the royal theatre next week and a summer outdoor cinema too. Watch this space!
